Some random beautiful things

Now that I’ve stopped smoking, I find it harder to focus and my mind wanders a lot more than usual. 5 hours sleep also doesn’t help much either. Luckily, a rare slow work day and the internet is perfect for this mental state, and I think this “blog” could use a little update. so…

Nick Deakin

I’m loving Nick Deakin‘s illustrations. Some of his work reminds me a bit of…

Ed Fella

…Ed Fella’s lettering work. It’s great to see his site getting filled in bit by bit. Truly, an American master.

Somehow, maybe because of the colours, this leads me back to Jemma Gura’s old-school (ie. 2000-2002, when web design was the shiznit! see previous post here) work as prate

prate

…the destroyer in grace, what a beautiful tagline. And speaking of ‘tags’…

Omen

…it was nice to see Omen working on this piece last weekend. Can’t wait to feature more of his work in the next issue.

Another project that caught my eye recently was Jonathan Harris’ polaroid project (this guy is the undisputed master of an emerging info-aesthetic art practice; see also we feel fine).

Meanwhile, the images on this mysterious website remind me of the things I used to do in university and now want to do again…

forms and shapes

…leading my memory to the first time I encountered the sublime work of Daido Moriyama.

just google him…

(updated)

leaping from moriyama to the tangentially related design(art) collective tomato who have just relaunched their site

tomato: book of jam
tomato: underworld live

…chock full of beautiful new work and access to an extensive archive.

While browsing through it, I discovered that they’ve added new stuff to the members section (sign up, its free!) of the Underworld Live site, including a series of downloadable pdfs entitled the Book of Jam, filled to the brim with (underworld related—everything related) poetic imagery and ideas.

And continuing along the pdf download kick, I’ve spent way too much time perusing designer Satoru Nihei’s Sleepless Nights of the Beautifool Mind

Sleepless Nights of the Beautifool Mind

…Nihei offers us a series of monthly journals, documenting his day to day, quietly, reflectively, humorously, “japanesely” and “designerly”… in short beautifooooly. It is a gift.

What inspires you about Daido Moriyama’s work?

Hi Scarlett, many, many things inspire me about his work, the dark subject matter, the texture and scale, the richness of the blacks. There’s something so visceral about his photographs, I find them very moving.
