I designed this typographic poster at the request of my good friend Sarah Boris, for SoUp (East London) and Joiners Arms “Make Soup Not War” exhibition/event at Cordy House. Given the theme, I was inspired by the revolutions happening in North Africa and the Middle East and decided to pay tribute with this design.
I’d been looking for an occasion to use Non-format’s Otto typeface for a while, and it does most of the work here, paired with a few well chosen words and a heart-felt sentiment. The A3 posters were beautifully Risograph printed by London’s Ditto Press.
Be sure to check out fellow LCP grad Constantin Demner’s contribution to the exhibition.
And on a related note, I recently came across a beautiful interview with Egyptian author Ahdaf Soueif on Democracy Now, and thought it would be appropriate to share an excerpt from it here:
It was as though everybody had been locked in solitary in a small little dark box, and told to be afraid of everything else and sort of rattled from time to time. And then you’d opened the box and stepped out and found that everything was great. You know, there was light. There were other people.
And what happened was that almost overnight a civic space was created in Tahrir Square that was the ideal space, that one imagined, that everybody imagined how the country should be or how any country should be. People were really careful with each other. People were overly courteous. People were picking up rubbish. People were bringing things to offer. It very soon became that you didn’t go to Tahrir without something to offer, whether it was cookies, whether it was your effort, whether it was water, whether it was medicines for the field hospitals. In other words, everybody was finding the best in themselves and putting it forward. And that was just incredible.
