The Cosmodôme is Canada’s only world-class museum devoted entirely to astronautics and space exploration. In advancing it’s mission to “stimulate the interest of the young… to space science, scientific literacy and careers related to the world of astronautics”, the museum is engaging in a massive overhaul of its philosophy and infrastructure, highlighted by the development of three interactive ‘missions’, projecting the visitor into the role of engineer and cosmonaut.
This overhaul includes a stellar (pun-intended) brand platform developed by Parallèle, and in partnership with BBDO/Proximity Canada, I was in charge of the art direction for the new Cosmodôme website.
The primary goal of the site is to create an immersive and informational experience that entices and prepares users to experience the missions. Parallax scrolling between and within pages creates a sense of motion and space, while guiding users through relevant content. The extensive mission teaser pages provide detailed information and context for each mission, presented through video, text, images and quizzes.
Visitor information is presented in a straightforward manner without sacrificing the overall art direction, while the encyclopedic documentation centre acts as a knowledge base for all things astronautics, accessible both as a visual grid or as a filtered list.
Congratulations and thanks to the entire team that rallied behind this project (including gsmprjct°, who developed the new museum concept, and quatrecentquatre, who integrated my designs), and to the client for believing in an audacious design approach. This new communications platform represents an ambitious leap forward for the Cosmodôme, one that will help to inspire a brand new generation of astronauts, scientists and engineers.
