New Year, New Portfolio

With the passing of the new year, and all the attendant reflection this entails, I’ve finally taken the time to revisit my portfolio pdf. The main goal of this redesign was to represent the growing diversity of my practice while highlighting the common threads (typography, poetics, collaboration, etc.) that tie my work together.

The process of thinking through my work was surprisingly difficult. Though it’s a new portfolio, it doesn’t actually feature very much new work. This is partly due to the honest fact that my newest work isn’t necessarily my best (something I clearly need to work on), and also due to the desire for the portfolio to act more as a signpost, rather than a comprehensive collection. Nonetheless, there are several exciting new projects included, alongside new documentation of older work. I’ve cherry-picked through my output over the last few years to select pieces that point towards the type of work I want to be doing.

The final few pieces presented in the pdf reflect this quite well. Both 2 Poems and the C.R.E.A.M. diptych are small typographic projects that I probably wouldn’t normally have included. However they represent, imho, strong, simple ideas given concrete material form. Conversely, The Howl documentation (with photos by Thien V.) is a testament to how my practice has shifted from primarily designing artifacts to organising/facilitating social experiences. I’ve also included documentation of student work at the end to highlight the central role education plays in my practice.

I’ve updated my CV to reflect this as well. It is now a far more comprehensive document geared more towards describing the totality of my practice as a designer, artist, organiser and educator, rather than a list of jobs and clients.

These updates are part of a mini-sabbatical that I’ve imposed on myself for the month of January. A time to rethink my work and do some research and experimentation. Now that I’ve got a better sense of where I’ve been, what I’ve done and what I want to do, I’m pretty excited moving forward. I’ll be taking contracts again in February, so if you like what you see and think we might be able to work together, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

I’d also like to take the time to thank some of the amazing collaborators and clients I’ve worked with over the last year. First and foremost, my dear collectives Artivistic and Howl Arts. We truly accomplished a lot in the last year. I really enjoyed the opportunity to work with Daily Tous les Jours, Fuse Magazine and Skol, all essential and amazing cultural organisations. And though they’re not represented in the current folio (to avoid stylistic repetition beyond anything else), I’m really proud of the continuing work I’ve done for Cinema Politica and Katarina Soukup. Thanks all, you make everything worthwhile.
