Yes, I have a day job… and at times, it’s a drag. The day to day grind to make a buck takes its toll on everyone I suppose, but I think I have a severe, innate aversion to the 9-5 (or 10-7). Yet sometimes, as was the case at last week’s Boomerang awards, that feeling subsides for a bit and I’ll step out to appreciate the rewards and recognition from my peers in the industry. I had the honour of being awarded two grand prizes for two very different websites I art directed/designed over the last year. The team behind both these projects, from IA to integration, gave a superhuman effort, so I think a little ego-stroking is in order…

Expozine 2008 recap

WOW! what a weekend… I’ve been participating in Expozine for the last 4 years and I honestly think that this year was the best one yet. The atmosphere was really great, and though the place was packed, it seemed easier to circulate and socialise than previous years. We did really well at our tables and met a ton of great, creative, friendly people.

Before I give props to our awesome corner, I think it’s important to give due credit to the crew of Archive Montreal (both past and present) who have worked so hard to make it all happen over the last seven years (for what I’m sure has been little monetary reward). Their personalities and energy imbue this festival with such an open, supportive and progressive community spirit that will keep it from ever becoming a snooty, trendy, book fair. Expozine really is by the people, for the people in the best possible way. So, to Billy, Dave, MC, Louis, Andy and all the other volunteers that I’m unaware of, a heartfelt thank you. You represent exactly why I love Montreal.

…well, not quite… I’ve just corrected and signed off on the proofs, and according to the printer we should have copies in our hands by Friday, just in time for Expozine. Given last year’s debacle, I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I’ve got a much better feeling this time around.

This issue is STACKED, with over 30 contributors filling 180 pages. I’m particularly happy with the cover this time around, not leaving it to the very last moment certainly helps! I’ll have an official issue post up soon, with full details, credits and the pdf available for download, but for those who want to get their hands on it first, please swing by Expozine this weekend and say hello.

We’ve just completed the design of the tenth issue, and the files are on their way to the printer. Hopefully, we won’t run into any of the problems we had last year, and the issue will be hot off the presses for Expozine. More info soon…

Omen

Friend and graffiti artist extraordinaire Omen is opening his So Low show tonight at Gallery Yves Laroche. I designed the poster for him a while back and they’ll be making limited edition prints for those of us that can’t afford his actual pieces. I personally can’t wait to see his new work, of which I’ve caught a few glimpses over the last few months. It should be a great event, hope to see you there.

Elephant and Castle

Last Sunday, Cat and I returned to Montréal after an amazing 3-week European vacation. We’d like to give gracious thanks and mad props to our hosts in Paris, Ljubljana and Vienna: Damien–host of magical evenings at 7ème ciel, Oliver and Vida–Oliver’s Studio Poper is an amazing and unique example of socially engaged communication (more on the studio and our collaboration with them soon), and my former classmate at LCP and good buddy Coco (Studio Elastik) and Saray of the Nucleo house. You are all inspirations and kind souls. Thank you!
