I’d been waiting to see my favourite band in the world, Godspeed You! Black Emperor for well over ten years. I had given up hope when the hiatus that began in 2003 seemed to spell the end of the band until they announced last spring they were reforming. I was ecstatic then, and I am ecstatic now. I finally got the opportunity to see them, not once, but twice this past week and was completely and utterly blown away.
…not once, but twice this week!
First up, on Art Threat, where I speak to Rob Maguire about Imaging Apartheid: the Poster Project for Palestine. We’ve extended the deadline, so go submit some work!
And then, alongside partner in crime John W. Stuart, on the Kitchen Bang Bang Law on CKUT. We talk to Vincent Tinguely about the ideas behind Four Minutes to Midnight, the latest issue and our upcoming event (!!!). It’s actually rather insightful! Download the mp3 audio archive here, the interview starts about ten minutes in.
Thanks Rob, Vince!

“…but what more could / you expect when you’re / the last of your kind /
living amongst the / incompetent others / in the light they waste”
— F.A. Nettelbeck
Four Minutes to Midnight is proud to announce the publication of its eleventh issue. The double issue features Happy Hour, the final collection of work by American poet FA Nettelbeck (1950-2011), lavishly illustrated by Montreal-based visual artist Sophie Jodoin, and Fugue XI, an epic typographic cut-up poem edited by John W. Stuart, Kevin Lo, Hillary Rexe and Sara McCulloch.

Four Minutes to Midnight is excited to co-present the second Howl! concert, featuring saxophonist Jason Sharp, harp duet Sarah Pagé and Robin Best, and a quartet lead by Nick Kuepfer. The Howl! concert series highlights and celebrates Montreal’s fiercely independent arts communities and the strong ties they share with social justice struggles here and abroad.
The concert takes place next Thursday, March 24th, at the beautiful Sala Rossa, advanced tickets are only 5 bucks and available at the usual fine record stores/venues.
More information on the facebook event page.
UPDATE: Stefan talks with Vince about the musicians and ideas behind the Howl! concert series on CKUT.

Our project Imaging Apartheid is featured in this week’s Arts and Culture show on CUTV. Also in this episode a great feature on Concordia’s Co-op Bookstore and some amazing and inspiring footage from the revolution happening in Egypt.
Thanks CUTV! I really need to learn to speak slower on camera!
After posting the video below and thinking of Vic Chestnutt’s life and death, and independent music and culture generally, I think it’s about time I write a few words on the passing of FA Nettelbeck. Please don’t read this as any sort of obituary (Stephen Kessler has us covered on that front) or anything official from our press acting as the publisher of his last printed work. It’s just a personal reaction, having had a few weeks for the news to settle in.
Fred’s death hit me hard, it shocked, confused and angered me. I honestly didn’t know how to feel, or how MUCH to feel… Who was this person to me? Could I call him a friend? I never had the chance to meet him, though I’d been in correspondence with him for the last three years.
New Visual is a newly launched “inspirational resource minimalist blog-a-thing” curated by Simon Carrasco, Philippe Laurent, Anne Laure To and myself. Expect a wide assortment of posts relating to art, design and contemporary visual culture. Follow and enjoy!
Join us on Monday night for a benefit concert in support of Imaging Apartheid: The Poster Project for Palestine.
As the submission deadline for the project approaches, we’re planning a series of local events in order to outreach to artists, build support and raise funds for the eventual printing, exhibition and distribution of the selected posters. Come out for some beautiful music and learn more about/support the project while you’re at it.
Featuring Jason Sharp, Adam Kinner, and the Erik Hove Trio.

It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the passing of poet F.A. Nettelbeck. Fred passed away on January 20th, 2011 in Bend, Oregon. He was 60 years old.
For now, John and I have got no words. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
“Throw down a few
against the darkness
brother”
from Kevin Opstedal’s remembrance poem.
[UPDATE] Obituary by Stephen Kessler.
